Understanding Waterproofing and Breathability Ratings

Some jackets have been rated for their waterproofing and breath-ability properties. But what do they mean for your corporate meeting, event or giveaway?

Take for example an all weather jacket with a 3000MM waterproof rating and a 3000G/M2 breathability rating. The waterproof rating refers to the amount of water a garment can withstand in 24 hours before it leaks. In this case, the 3000mm means a jacket will withstand 3000 millimeters of water (almost 10 feet of rain or snow in 24 hours) before it leaks.

Keep in mind that a jacket’s waterproof rating is generally for the fabric, not the complete jacket. Outerwear with details like sealed seams and waterproof zippers withstand even more water. So seeing a jacket with 5000mm or 10000mm with taped seams and welded waterproof pockets will keep you drier for a longer period of time.

The breath-ability rating, on the other hand, refers to the amount of vapor a square inch (G/M2) of fabric will allow to pass in 24 hours. So a jacket with a high rating of 3000/M2 or say even higher 5000mm/M2 will not only resist the penetration of water through the garment, they also allow the internal moisture to escape for all-around comfort.

Jackets that have these high ratings can be used for Fishing Trips, Golf Outings, or Winter Escapes were inclement weather can come without warning. Regardless if you taking your attendees site seeing where mist from the ocean, rain in the tropics, snow from the ski slope or stormy weather golfing at Bandon Dunes, providing a high quality waterproof jacket will leave a lasting marketing impression while keeping your guest enjoying the day’s events.
